ELECTION RESULTS INFRASTRUCTURE

Every result has a route back to its source.

VoteTally is designed to preserve polling-station records, verify counts against source evidence and update result views as approved returns arrive. Every published figure should have a traceable path back to its station.

For election management bodies, political parties and authorised observer operations.

A traceable path from station to summary

See the figure.
Examine the evidence.

When physical result sheets are damaged, disputed or hard to retrieve, a timely, independently preserved digital record can help teams reconstruct what was submitted and when. VoteTally’s demonstration follows a station return through capture, supervisor review and aggregation, with evidence available for inspection. It does not replace the physical ballot, official custody procedures or legal collation rules.

Only verified submissions enter the demonstration’s published totals. In a production election, release rules, disputed-return handling and the authority to publish would be configured with the customer. The demonstration uses fictional parties, candidates and results; it is neither a forecast nor an official count.

A connected results workflow

Built around the handoffs that matter on election day and during post-election review.

01 / FIELD

Polling-station capture

Field agents enter counts and attach a legible pink sheet or equivalent result record, with station identity and submission time.

02 / REVIEW

Supervisor verification

Supervisors inspect figures against source evidence, approve supported returns or query a record for correction.

03 / COLLATION

Geographic drill-down

Verified returns flow into geographic totals as they arrive; reporting coverage shows which stations are still outstanding.

04 / TRACEABILITY

Evidence-linked results

Keep digital copies of source sheets, submission versions and an activity trail for review and dispute resolution.

Keep a second record when the physical trail is under pressure.

Election operations can face damaged materials, delayed returns and contested collation. A station agent can capture the count and its source sheet close to the point of counting, then send it into a controlled review path. If a physical sheet later becomes unavailable, authorised reviewers can examine the preserved digital copy, timestamps and submission history.

The system protects and organises digital evidence; it cannot physically secure ballot boxes or certify a disputed result on its own. Human verification and the applicable election law remain decisive.

Security in layers, recovery by design.

A production design must be tested against the election’s threat model, legal requirements and expected scale.

01 / ACCESS

Control who can do what

Role-based permissions, strong authentication, device and session controls, least privilege and separation of field, verification and administration duties.

02 / EVIDENCE

Protect the source record

Encrypted transfer and storage, content checks, cryptographic hashes, version history and restricted access to result sheets and attachments.

03 / INTEGRITY

Make changes accountable

Record submission, query, correction, approval and publication events. Reconcile station counts and surface duplicates, missing returns and anomalies for human review.

04 / OPERATIONS

Watch and respond

Central monitoring, alerting, access reviews, vulnerability management, independent testing and a rehearsed incident response plan for election periods.

05 / CONTINUITY

Keep independent copies

Multiple service locations, isolated backups, defined recovery targets and tested restoration paths help sustain operations if a component fails or evidence is lost.

06 / PUBLICATION

Publish with controls

Release only approved figures, show reporting coverage and preserve prior versions and source links so corrections can be explained rather than hidden.

What is live today, and what is planned?

The private demonstration shows role-based capture, verification, evidence-linked aggregation and an activity history with synthetic data. The wider controls above describe a proposed production architecture. Hosting topology, penetration testing, independent audit, backup drills, service levels and operational staffing must be specified, implemented and verified for each deployment. No internet-connected system can be guaranteed unhackable.

One platform concept.
Different operational needs.

01

Election management bodies

Coordinate capture, verification and publication with a reviewable record across administrative levels.

02

Political parties

Organise field returns, compare submissions with source evidence and monitor geographic reporting.

03

Authorised observers

Review permitted result views and evidence trails within an agreed access model.

Designed around your election operation.

The proposed production model is hybrid: customer-controlled or local infrastructure can work alongside independently hosted services and geographically separated backups. The exact architecture can combine institutional hosting with managed cloud services, avoiding a single operating location or provider dependency. Connectivity loss, service failure, cyber incidents and disputed results each need a documented fallback and recovery procedure.

01Map the election workflow, legal custody and reporting structure
02Agree threat model, access, evidence retention and hosting responsibilities
03Test a pilot, failover, recovery and election-period support

Hybrid deployment and independent services are a proposed production approach, not a claim that the current private demo runs across multiple providers. Security controls, recovery times and service commitments are set and tested in the implementation agreement.
